RIGHTS-BASED APPROACHES TO WORKING WITH ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN: AN INTERNATIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP (Note: This Workshop has already been successfully concluded)

In order to address the needs of the ever-increasing orphan population in Sub-Saharan Africa, there is need to develop and apply rights-based approaches at all stages of OVC responses. This workshop will help those working with children to understand the basic tenets of rights-based programming in relation to orphans and vulnerable children. This is a reflection and learning workshop, through which participants get insights for improving organizational practice. This workshop will be relevant for people interested in working with OVCs or those who are already in such roles in governments, NGOs, religious organizations and CBOs who want to update their skills.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT & CONFLICT SENSITIVE PROGRAMMING IN DEVELOPMENT WORK

Most of the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are either in a state of conflict, post conflict or emergency. These contexts present complex developmental and humanitarian needs. To this end, many CBOs, FBOs, local NGOs, International NGOs and UN agencies have stepped in to address developmental and humanitarian needs. On the other hand, conflict-sensitive programming is required even in non-conflict settings, as communities seek access to scarce resources and opportunities. It is against this backdrop that this course was designed to enable development organizations manage conflicts and be conflict sensitive in programming.

Course Objectives:

The overall purpose of the workshop is to enhance the skills and knowledge of Partnership facilitators and support staff in conflict resolution and peace building in conflict or non-conflict settings. The objectives of the conflict resolution and peace building workshop are to:

  • To deepen participants’ understanding of conflict resolution and peace building concepts, tools and practices.
  • To provide an opportunity for participants to share and explore experiences, strategies and challenges of conflict resolution and peace building in development work.
  • To impart participants with practical knowledge and skills in conflict management and conflict sensitive programming.
  • To offer realistic recommendations on how participants will operationalise gained knowledge and skills in their organizations.

GENDER ANALYSIS AND PLANNING: A CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP (Note: This Workshop has already been successfully concluded)

Summary :

Gender Analysis and Planning is a critical development practice adopted by Governments, NGOs and the private sector to enhance the equitable distribution of resources to address the needs of women and men, boys and girls. Within the rapidly changing socio-economic and political context in Africa - and the growing need to ensure that equal opportunities are created for all people to achieve their highest possible potential - there is need to strengthen the gender analysis and planning skills of professionals, to ensure that gender mainstreaming is undertaken in the most effective way possible. Above all, there is need to explore better ways of managing gender analysis and planning in organizations.

Facilitated by highly experienced international consultants from ADCAMS (Malawi) and Shima Institute of Management and Leadership (Kenya), this 5-day workshop aims at equipping participants with the most current skills in mainstreaming gender into development and organization processes.

This Workshop will be of benefit for policy makers, project officers, managers, Gender Coordinators, students and practitioners from NGOs, CBOs and Governments.

BASIC NGO MANAGEMENT COURSE FOR HIV/AIDS PROGRAMMES (Note: This Workshop has already been successfully concluded)

NGOs have been instrumental in responding to HIV and AIDS. In view of this, and the concomitant increase in funding for HIV and AIDS programmes, it is imperative that funds channelled through NGOs are managed effectively and efficiently. This course seeks to impart development practitioners with basic NGO management skills.

MANAGING PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS IN MIGRANT AND EMERGENCY CONTEXTS: A CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP (Note: This Workshop has already been successfully concluded)

Summary:

The East and Horn of African countries have experienced many types of conflicts resulting in deaths, displacements and destruction of people's livelihoods. These conflicts are mainly political and or resource based. As a result, most of the countries in the region are either in conflict, post-conflict or emergency situations. Governments and CSOs are responding emergent economic, social and cultural challenges in these contexts. There are equally many challenges facing these responses, for instance, issues of accountability, inability to show meaningful impact, and problem of sustaining the different initiatives. It is on this premise that this course was designed aimed at providing practical knowledge and skills for participants in order to effectively and efficiently manage development responses in migrant and emergency contexts.

Target Participants:

This workshop is targeted at 20 participants drawn from INGOs, NGOs and Civil Society Organizations working especially in Eastern, Central and West Africa. They include Programme Managers, Coordinators, project officers other individuals who may be interested.

Course Contents:

POLICY ANALYSIS, ADVOCACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS: AN INTERNATIONAL CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP

Training Description:

This training workshop is designed for middle and upper level staff of NGOs, private philanthropic agencies, public sector organizations and individuals interested in refining their skills in Policy analysis, Advocacy and Human Rights. The course will provide an opportunity for NGOs and public service executives to share experiences and practices as they acquire new skills to further strengthen their Policy analysis, Advocacy, communication skills in the a Rights-Based framework.

The course is divided into 3 major components namely; Policy analysis, Advocacy and Human Rights. Each component is designed to build a specific set of skills in the participants but is also a highly interrelated to the other components that delivers one complete package for the professional who needs the variety of skills to effectively work within a Rights Based Approach further Policy and Advocacy work in the development sector.

The overall objective of the training is to foster the acquisition of practical skills and shared understanding of the concept, practice and principles of Policy analysis, Advocacy and Human Rights in Development Work.

Training Course Outline:

1. Policy Analysis;
  • Introduction to the concept and practice of Public/ Social policy.
  • Policy development processes

The training will be highly participatory and will use Participatory Learning and Action tools upholding Adult learning Principles. Power point presentations will be very limited, instead our experienced trainers will use Case studies, actual policy review and analysis, scenario analysis, diagramming, Group work etc building on the participants own knowledge to impart new knowledge and skills.
