Institutions of higher learning in Africa provide the bedrock for socio-economic and political development. These institutions have lost, and continue to lose, critical numbers of academic staff, non-academic staff and students to the pandemic. Each of these categories have to deal with the different ramifications of the pandemic – chief of which is insufficient care and support mechanisms due to stigma and discrimination, and absent policy and structural mechanisms for responding to the pandemic. Without proper structures and processes in academic institutions, there is a dim possibility of enhancing prevention, care and support and impact mitigation processes/activities.
However, there is also evidence to suggest that institutions of higher learning are at the forefront of the response to the pandemic. To what extent are they succeeding in responding to the needs of staff and students? What role should academic institutions be playing in strengthening action on the pandemic in their institutions and in communities?
The Symposium will reflect on the response to HIV and AIDS in institutions of higher learning - which is perhaps one of the slowest in most countries affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic in Africa
